Day 10: oldies but goodies
People who know me know I love reality TV (ok, any TV). Ice cream. Sunshine. Sushi. YA fiction. (Ew, I'm so basic.)
But people who know me best know I love cereal topped with melted cheese. Indie movie trailers. Bad puns. Old people.
That's right - I like hanging out with elderly folks. Given the choice between A) baby on my hip, or B) man with a replacement hip, I'd chose the latter. Every time. And not just because I am NOT a baby person. (I'm not, but that's beside the point.)
In college, I led a program called "Linking Generations" where we took undergrads to an assisted living home to spend time with the residents - playing games, singing songs, decorating cookies, whatever. I also volunteered at hospice - which was a life changing experience I'll delve into another time.
Anyway, once I graduated and entered the real world, I completely stopped volunteering with the elderly. I continued to prioritize and cultivate strong relationships with my own grandparents, but didn't seek out opportunities for enriching the lives of lonely elderly people like I had before.
So now - as I'm in this unique, spectacular time of my life, with no job or commitments, and time to get back to the things I love doing - I'm reconnecting with this passion.
My only regret? Not recognizing how much I missed it sooner.
